OUR WORK

RM CDO 80

A distinctive identity that is easily recognisable and iconic to Royal Marines Commandos of today and yesteryear.

Background

RMA – The Royal Marines Charity is the main charity that exists to help the whole Royal Marines family.

RMA – The Royal Marines Charity is the central pillar of the Royal Marines Family, drawing together those who aspire to join, those who serve, those who have served and those who support and enable us.

The challenge

The charity wanted a fitting identity for a fundraising campaign that involved the serving Corps and membership through 2022 that encompasses RM Commando 80 and Falklands 40.

Looking to combine both significant military dates was a tricky challenge, and it was therefore decided that a specific effort around the Commando 80 anniversary would be the driver for 2022 and the identity that accompanied the fundraising.

The Solution

With much iconic imagery over the past 80 years, there were many facets that could be a starting point.

This also needed to be distinctive Royal Marines. Churchill had in June 1940 ordered the formation of a commando made up of elements from Army Battalions. Royal Marines Commando was established in February 1942.

After some early research coupled with stakeholder meetings, the underlining message was the ‘evolution of a commando force’, from the formation in 1942 to the current Future Commando Force, this evolution was the driver to the visual aspect.

Using the iconic Commando memorial statue at Lochaber, near Achnacarry Castle the first training depot, and licensed MOD imagery for the right-hand figure the two were combined. Through a number of concepts and iterations, the final design was signed off.

Results

The end result is one that is easily recognisable and iconic to Royal Marines Commandos of today and yesteryear.

A number of different colour versions allowed for use within the current charity brand guidelines to use across different touchpoints. The distinctive identity will be a driver in helping raise awareness of the charity’s efforts in 2022.

80 Challenges in 2022!

The identity will factor in the “Royal Marines Commando 80 Challenge”, with the Corps family taking on a set of ’80’ based challenges to raise funds for RMA – The Royal Marines Charity. This could be anything from setting yourself the goal to take 8000 steps a day to running 80 marathons throughout the year.

Pier 9 accepted the complex challenge of creating a simple image which captures 80 years of history that could be reproduced on a range of materials stretching from T shirts to email footers. He worked closely with us, asking intelligent questions and drawing appropriate deductions which he translated into designs. He undertook detailed research, and offered a number of suitable options to meet our needs. Tim was responsive, quick and applied feedback astutely. The end result is one which is easily recognisable and iconic to Royal Marines Commandos of today and yesteryear. It will be used globally in 2022, at the forefront of the Royal Marines’ shop window to the nation in this special anniversary year as they conduct nationwide commemorative events.
